All it takes is a little power

From the least expensive to the most expensive vehicle, all it takes to enjoy the ride is a little electrical power. Every vehicle comes with a complicated electrical system. If you do not fully understand the system, it is best to let the pros handle any repairs.

Here at Hartland Auto Service, we understand the complexity of the different vehicle electrical systems. You are in good hands when you come to us in Elkhart, IN to get your vehicle’s electrical system checked.

What are the 5 parts of the automotive electrical system?

#1. The overall electrical system - This system holds all the components for the vehicle’s electrical needs. It has the battery, wires, fuses, coil, and alternator to name a few of the parts.

These components all work together to produce electrical current, the electricity flowing to the lights, turn signals, and other components that need electricity to operate.

#2. Charging system - This is the work of the alternator. As your engine runs, it produces electrical power and then sends it to the battery to keep it charged. It also supplies power to all your vehicles accessories that need electricity to function.

#3. Ignition System - There are two types of ignition systems. One for gas-powered vehicles and one for diesel-powered vehicles. For the former, the ignition system is comprised of the ignition coils, spark plugs, batteries, fuse, and relay.

The diesel ignition system does not have these parts and uses heat to ignite the air-fuel mixture.

#4. The Starting System - This is the realm of your vehicle’s starter. It provides the initial power to get your vehicle’s engine started. Once it has been started, then the other systems take over.

#5. Fuel system - This is something that is powered by the overall electrical system. Electrical power is needed for the fuel pump to operate as well as other fuel system components.

How to check car's electrical system?

There are several different tools that you can use, depending on which part of the electrical system you are checking. The first and probably the least expensive tester is the circuit tester.

This tool has an alligator clip on one end of a wire and a light in the handle. If the light illuminates, then you have a good circuit.

Another tool you can use would be a multimeter. This is good for testing your battery and alternator. It comes with 2 probes, and you touch the probes to the corresponding terminals on both components.

The meter will gauge will move indicating if there is a problem or not.
